Switched-On Bach is the first studio album by the American composer Wendy Carlos, released under the name Walter Carlos, in October 1968 by Columbia Records. Produced by Carlos and Rachel Elkind, the album is a collection of pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach performed by Carlos and Benjamin Folkman on a Moog synthesizer. It played a key role in bringing synthesizers to popular music, which had until then been mostly used in experimental music. Presenting the 1968 album, Switched-On Bach by Wendy Carlos originally published under her birth name, Walter Carlos. These are electronic realizations of well-known works by J. Without this album, the Moog synthesizer likely would not have reached such popularity. By performing these well-known keyboard classics by J. Carlos trained as a composer and worked as a recording engineer before her 1968 Switched-On Bach became the first classical music album to be certified platinum. This, and subsequent albums, brought the Moog synthesizer to wider public attention, and her 1971 soundtrack to A Clockwork Orange introduced the vocoder. Wendy Carlos's Switched-On Bach is one of those rare novelty recordings that never gets boring. In the capable hands of Carlos, Bach's keyboard masterpieces sound like they were made for the otherworldly blurps, farts, and chimes of a Moog synthesizer. And, in a sense, they were. Great album, the memory's come flooding back when I play this as I purchased it many moons ago on a cassete tape wich I still own. Needless to say the sound is much improved and sounds really fresh. Bearing Carlos' original name of Walter Carlos, the album was conceived by Carlos not as an attempt to revive Bach but because she was dissatisfied with the use of electronic instruments before 1968 and wanted to use them to play appealing music. The album was a smash, peaking at No. 10 on the Billboard chart, staying at the top of Billboards classical chart for three years, being certified platinum, and winning three Grammy Awards.
