The title of this compilation says it all: Essential. The vast majority of the tracks on this compilation are certainly ones to be familiar within the reggae genre. If these tracks are not that important, essential could definitely be applied to the artists who made them. As much as I enjoy most of the stuff Ministry of Sound releases, I feel like I shouldn’t be stuck to a single genre of music; in my case electronic music. Seeing how MoS released this non-electronic music release, I decided to get it and have a listen; and I have to say this compilation made me love reggae.

Usually I dedicate a paragraph for each disc when I review releases, but seeing how there is no distinct style per disc I’m just going to have a single paragraph for the entire music aspect of the compilation. If there are any significant differences, then it would be that the first disc (at least the first half of it) is composed of more recent pop reggae while the rest of the compilation consists of older classical reggae. Regardless of time period, all of these tunes are quality listeners. Genre wise I can hear roots, ragga hip hop, and dub; hence the compilation does its job of presenting a diverse view of reggae. If I have to choose which tracks are my favorite from the compilation, it would have to be The Paragons’ Blackbirds Singing, Bob Marley And The Wailers’ Trenchtown Rock, Peter Tosh’s Get Up Stand Up, and The Dynamics’ Whole Lotta Love.

I am aware that there are people who will question why Ministry Of Sound releases these non-electronic music releases, and the answer is that it is a way for MoS to sell compilations with songs that believe it or not are relevant to Electronic Music. The reason why I say that is because when Ministry Of Sound gets the appropriate license to have certain tracks on compilations, some of those tracks will sample other tracks; and hence it will be easier to get licenses for the sampled tracks. An example which I instantly recognized is Wayne Smith’s Under Me Sleng Teng likely getting a place on the compilation due to SL2’s Way In My Brain, which samples the earlier said song, having appeared on previous Ministry Of Sound compilations. Even with that initiative, it’s a good thing that such a large independent label releases compilations that go out of the way from what they are mainly known for. As much as I love electronic music, I need a break from it every now and then; and compilations like this make the breaks enjoyable.
