The American Analog Set sometimes referred to as AmAnSet was an Austin-based indie rock, lo-fi band. They have released six studio albums, on the record labels Emperor Jones and Tiger Style Records, with their latest Set Free on Arts & Crafts. Formed in 1995, the group's early sound was highly influenced by krautrock and post-rock and British shoegazer bands like Cocteau Twins, often featuring long instrumental passages. Over time, their songs became shorter and more pop-influenced. The band has. Album 1999 12 Songs. The Golden Band. I Must Soon Quit the Scene. The six LP's this Austin-based band of anti-rockers produced during its tenure can be logically split into two halves. The first three albums stand distinctly apart from the later three, primarily due to the different direction the band took with their 2001 release "Know By Heart". Most of the elements of the old days still remained, but the first notes of Punk As Fuck immediately let listeners know that progress meant that not only had they signed to a new record label; they were also now a pop group.

It's not to say that was necessarily a bad decision, but it was certainly a stylistic departure. Modest Mouse did the same thing at almost exactly the same time, when they released "Moon and Antarctica", as did The Black Angels about ten years later, as did so many others. One can hardly be mad about it; their songwriting arguably only improved on the later albums, but in creating those catchy melodies, they inevitably had to sacrifice something, even if that "something" was what touched so many of us in the first place. It seems to be a natural reaction that some bands have when their unique post-rock drones start to gain the attention of a wider listening audience. All that being said, this album here is the last of the good old days on the Emperor Jones label and is surely the most song-oriented and accessible of the first three albums. The B-side of this record may be the best example of something they did throughout their career, which I've always loved. The tracks were all recorded in such a way as to fit seamlessly next to each other, to create a single, cohesive piece—an approach that I think has been lost on much of today's music. Maybe that's another reason why these albums just seem meant for vinyl. Will this little band's output have the same effect on you as it did for me? Maybe. Maybe not. But this primer may at least get you started.
