Live at the Greek: Excess All Areas is a double live album by Jimmy Page and The Black Crowes, released by on 29 February 2000 and reissued by TVT Records on 4 July 2000. In October 1999, Page teamed up with the Crowes for a two-night performance of material from the Led Zeppelin catalogue and old blues and rock standards. I didn't really have that much fun doing it, grumbled singer Chris Robinson. It was alright, and Jimmy's a phenomenal guitarist, but to me it was just a job. The Black Crowes were dogged with comparisons to the Rolling Stones and the Faces throughout the first decade of their career, so it came as a mild surprise that they teamed with Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page in late 1999 for a couple of concerts. Zeppelin had a mystique and majesty about them that the Crowes never attempted to emulate. The double-disc album, released originally only through the internet but then through retail on TVT, essentially replicates an entire concert from Page and the Crowes, one of the first before they set out on a full-length American tour in the summer of 2000. The Black Crowes had found themselves in an untenable situation as well. Their back-to-basics By Your Side was released in January 1999 and had been pointedly ignored by their record label in terms of promotion. They did a popular episode of VH1s Behind the Music that spring, but otherwise were quietly hoping Columbia Records would forget to pick up the option on their next album so they could seek out greener pastures as free agents.
