John's Gris-Gris is among the most enduring recordings of the psychedelic era it sounds as mysterious and spooky in the 21st century as it did in 1968. It is the album where Mac Rebennack established a stage identity that has served him well. Almost everyone played percussion. Gris-Gris sounds like a post-midnight ceremony recorded in the bayou swamp instead of L. s Gold Star Studio where Phil Spector cut hits. The atmosphere is thick, smoky, serpentine, foreboding. Rebennack inhabits his character fully, delivering Creole French and slang English effortlessly in the grain of his half-spoken, half-sung voice. Текст песни: Got my sizzling Gris-Gris in my hand Day trippin' up, Back down by you Im the last of the best They call me the Gris-Gris , by Dr. Towards the end of 1965, after their meteoric rise to the top of the charts with I Got You Babe, Sonny and Cher were invited to perform at a private party in the penthouse apartment of mining tycoon Charles Engelhard Jr. at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City. The invitation came after Jackie Kennedy, a guest of the intimate party and on one of her first social outings following the tragic death of her late husband, expressed her wish to see the rising duo perform in the flesh at the event. The city was ripe with night clubs and other joints where a wide variety of music styles old and new where intermixed. Gris gris is the New Orleans term for voodoo, and one could be forgiven for thinking this album was recorded in the dead of night in one of the city s famed graveyards. Well, it was recorded in the dead of night at Los Angeles famed Gold Star Studios, where Phil Spector recorded many of his classics. John the Night Tripper, he of the feathered headdresses and name taken from an 1840s New Orleans root doctor. The result was probably the spookiest and most hypnotic album ever made voodoo psychedelia is about as close as you can come, but doesn t quite capture the otherworldly vibe. The sleevenotes match Gris Gris music for swampy mysticism, bordering on impenetrability to those not versed in Crescent City lore. Dr John. To you whom I may communicate with shortly through the smoke of Deaux-Deaux the rattlesnake whose forked tongue hisses pig Latin in silk and satin da-zaw-ig-day, may the gilded splinters of Auntie Andre spew forth in your path to light and guide your way through the bayous of life. For prime poetic mumbo-jumbo, look no further than the back cover text of Dr Johns debut LP Gris-Gris 1968. Of course the music is beyond stoned magnificence
