Album

More By Clogs. See Creatures in the Garden of Lady Walton is an album by Clogs, released in March 2010. This is their first non-instrumental album, featuring several guest singers, including Shara Worden, singer and songwriter of the indie rock band My Brightest Diamond, Matt Berninger, lead singer of Clogs' sister band the National and Sufjan Stevens, a prominent indie folk singersongwriter. The Garden is a rich botanical paradise created by Lady Walton the widow of the late British composer Sir William Walton on the island of Ischia in Italy's Bay of Naples. The album was recorded in stages in Brooklyn and Sydney during 2007-08 with another year and a half for mixing and finishing. It embodies some of the fortunate vagaries of creating music with four people in three cities on two continents, not to mention the cadre of additional musicians who brought their own presence of character to the project. released March 2, 2010. Like all Clogs releases, Lady Walton defies simple description. There are moments of impossible beauty Owl of Love , dense, but structured dissonance Adages of Cleansing , and of course, whimsical, classically minded, indie folk On the Edge , that when consumed all together, feel like a perfectly executed mash-up of Aaron Copland, Dead Can Dance, Bill Frisell, and Shirley Collins. Those familiar with Clogs excellent 2006 record Lanterns may be thrown off my Cocodrillo. An A Capella introduction that swells into choral work that wouldnt sound too out of place in an Eric Whitacre program, the song opens the album with a playful melody. So right away one might think that Clogs have opted for a lighter sound to the string heavy melancholy of Lanters. Well you would be half right. From Shara Worden a couple of people like The Decemberists last album right to Aaron Dressner, The Creatures in the Garden of Lady Walton feels somewhat like a party that would be streamed over NPR. Play album. Get album. Clogs is a mostly instrumental project led by Bryce Dessner and Australia's Padma Newsome both members of rock band The National. Clogs pre-dates The National and débuted with the highly melodic Thom's Night Out Jul 2001, Brassland. Their latest album is The Creatures in the Garden of Lady Walton Mar 2010, Brassland, which features contributions from The National's lead vocalist Matt Berninger, Shara Worden My Brightest Diamond and Sufjan Stevens. The other three of their five widely acclaimed albums are: the experimentally polyphoni read more. The Creatures in the Garden of Lady Walton. Released 2010. But its also soft and masterfully controlled, never distracting from the nuanced soundscapes bobbing in the background. Under The Radar. These are the creatures in Lady Walton's garden, they intone, round-robin style, while also singing the Italian names of various animals cocodrillo, rana, pappagallo in a seemingly onomatopoetic fashion. Composed- like every song here- by Newsome, it's a marvel of composition and production, the way the song stacks their voices as each animal enters the fray, the cacophony mimicking the sounds of a vibrant jungle. Then, just as skillfully, these voices are removed one at a time, returning the song to its starting point. Even if the conceit rubs you wrong, Lady Walton contains the most accomplished and varied music Clogs have recorded to date. With the digital-only EP, Veil Waltz Brassland, 2010, neoclassicist quartet Clogs announced that it was back in action after a lengthy hiatus. But that brief collection, largely written for film, was really only a taste-whetter for The Creatures in the Garden of Lady Walton, Clogs' first full-length CD since Lantern Brassland, 2006. Like Veil Waltz, Lantern presaged what was to come, but there's as much unexpected as there is familiar on The Creatures, Clogs' most ambitious project to date
