Album

Talkin' Honky Blues is a studio album by Canadian hip hop musician Buck 65. It was released on WEA in 2003. The album won the 2004 Juno Award for Alternative Album of the Year. He described it as a beat poetry album with hip. It's accepted practice to regard Buck 65 as a hip-hop artist, but there's very little in common between most modern hip-hop and Talkin' Honky Blues - the album title itself is a dead giveaway. Instead of jazzy or funky backing tracks, most of the tracks here crib heavily from country, which is where the honky comes in: this is the sort of thing that Buck 65 grew up with and what influenced him. One of Buck's best and most accessible albums to say many rappers cross over to the country meets rap motif (Everlast, Beck, Kid Rock to name a few) and his earlier stuff ws a weird blend of his unique turntablist and crate diggin skill with spoken word excerpts, Buck 65 quintessentially nails it this time around with his perfect storytelling skills and live instrumentation. Whether he's detailing of living on a boat (the Riverboat series), his admiration for his father (roses and bluejays, by the far the best cut on this album) or detailing a breakup or his love for baseball he raps and tells his rhymes with such eloquence he commands you to listen. Definitely worth your time if a first time beginner with his music and have a love of alternative indie rap.

There is quite simply nobody else like Buck 65. He sounds like he gargles petrol instead of mouth wash in the morning and probably busks throughout the day to earn enough for a quart of whisky for the evening, but I just love that haggard sound. I always thought he sounded a little like Tom Waits with that gravel voice infact, but anyway, this is by far his best release with some of the most beautiful beats i've ever heard.. To state it again no one does it like Buck 65. His songs are quite often story driven, whether it be about shining shoes ('Craftmanship') or living on a boat ('Riverbed') it just feels like hes describing something he has personally been through, and I like that, feels like your sitting in some lonely bar having these stories told to you. There are to many highlights on this ablum to accuratly pick the best, but I love the epic sound of '463', the sadness of 'Tired Out' and 'Roses & Blue Jays', and I love the fact that everytime I hear 'Protest' it puts a smile on my face. So all in all its an album which conveys many moods and manages to successfully explore many different sounds and not have a single song sound out of place, which is incredibly impressive. I cannot stress how good this album is, definatly check it out if your after something abit different.

This release from Buck 65 has the feel of hobo's and broken down railway sidings. Fused with his clever lyrics and raspy gravel throated delivery it is one of the finest albums i've heard in along time. Although Buck 65 is a Hip Hop artist this album is something else; with slide guitars, jaws harps and and a track about shining shoes it resists classification.
