I Am the Resurrection: A Tribute to John Fahey is a tribute album to guitarist John Fahey released in 2006. The album's title is taken from the title of the third track of his album The Transfiguration of Blind Joe Death. Co-produced by Stephen Brower and M. Ward, I Am the Resurrection was the first John Fahey tribute album released after his death. Brower related, We wanted to go after people who we thought wouldn't do traditional renderings of his stuff. The late John Fahey was to fingerpickers or simply pickers what Jimmy Smith was to soul-jazzhard bop organ - Fahey, in other words, wrote the book on fingerpicking, an earthy, rootsy, instrumental style of folk-rock acoustic guitar playing. I Am The Resurrection : A Tribute To John Fahey contains 13 reworkings by such artists as Calexico, Devendra Banhart, Sufjan Stevens, Cul De Sac, Grandaddy and M. Ward who is producing the entire project. I was tentative about my purchase because it is a tribute album. Most tribute albums typically contain one pearl in a bowlful of cacca. I was hoping that this was the exception. But 'I Am The Resurrection' turns out to be a great tribute to the John Fahey gestalt--that beautiful fingerpicking guitar style, the immense span of his musical dabblings, the fascinating and imperfect person he was. Nevertheless, I Am the Resurrection is resolutely a guitar players' album, with 12 of its 13 tracks centered upon Fahey's main instrument. Only Howe Gelb has the horse sense to transpose the ragtime of My Grandfather's Clock to an upright piano, noting astutely that Fahey played guitar like a piano player. In addition, the collection possesses an air of reverent nostalgia that likely would've irritated Fahey to no end. Nearly all of the songs gathered here originate from his classic 60s Takoma albums, ignoring the more dissonant, abstract material of his later. It would have been easy to mess up a tribute to the late, oh-so-great John Fahey. The concept itself is a bit ambitious when you consider just how god-like the man was at picking a guitar. But it totally works here: artists like Devendra Banhart, Lee Ranaldo and Calexico offer their own moody and moving takes on his work rather than spitting out musical Xeroxes. Eric Shea.
