Look Out. Jazz 1960. Turrentine developed his approach across a string of albums for Blue Note Records, beginning with his 1960 debut for the label, Look Out. Listen to Look Out right now. In terms of his sound, Turrentine was already his own man when he entered audio engineer Rudy Van Gelders New Jersey studio on Saturday, 18 June 1960, to record his first album as a leader for Blue Note Records. This 1960 set is from a period which many consider to have been Stanley Turrentine's most creative. The saxophonist, who would have been 75 this month March, was just coming out of an extended run with Max Roach's notably up-tempo orchestra. Backed here by a then-emerging powerhouse of sidemen, the set kicks off with the title track, a tersely phrased Turrentine blues composition. Look Out, originally released in 1960, is just one of the many Turrentine gems I have discovered. There is a lot to like about Look Out.
