Dark Star, the self-titled debut album is a true lost gem of its time and genre. Even though they contributed well to the early history of NWOBHM (New Wave Of British Heavy Metal), they failed to make it.

Today, they are usually remembered for the one minor hit they scored, "Lady Of Mars" which is found on many of the numerous Heavy Metal collections released over the years.
Listening to the album again, more than 30 years after my first listen, I come to understand why I played my vinyl to pieces back then. Dark Star's debut is filled with good songs, no less!

If you check it out, you will find that it's not just the song "Lady Of Mars" that is too good to be forgotten. Other songs from the album, "Kaptain Amerika", "Backstreet Killer", "Rockbringer" and the ballad "The Musician" all goes to show just how good Dark Star were.

The music is built up as expected for a 1981 NWOBHM release; crunchy guitars, good keyboards and melodic vocals, but both the material and performance are better than many of the other bands from the era.

Even though this period of metal was brief (late 70's to early 80's) and the soundscape generally may seem a tad dated by today's standards, it was essential to the way heavy metal developed during the '80s, and Dark Star were at the top of the genre!

Some CD edition edition specific notes are in place as there are significant differences at least for one of them, I'm speaking of the first CD edition released in Japan 1993 - PCCY-00495 by Canyon International. This CD tampers with the original layout and mix the original songs with bonus-tracks inserted as track 2,4,5,7,10,13. In my book that reads compilation and not re-release, even though the cover and title happens to be the same.
The next CD release in the UK in 2009 from Krescendo Record KRECD43 is the original record re-released on CD without any bonus-tracks at all but has the bonus of being able to hear just the album in a digital version. The third release is still not listed on discogs.com, released in Japan in 2011by Rubicon Music, RBNCD-1506 (ASIN: B006NUG55Y). This release contains 15 tracks, adding tracks 9-15 at the end of the original CD. I will try to add this release to discogs later tonight, but for those wanting the facts right now, the bonus tracks are identical to the 4th and so far last remaster re-release by Rock Candy, CANDY183 released in the UK, 2013.
The two bonus track editions and the compilation contains almost the same bonus tracks, but the two last includes a live version of Screamin'. in addition to not tampering with the original album's layout

The other album released by Dark Star in 1987, Real To Reel is not NWOBHM at all, but more of an AOR release, and so the history of Dark Star really is this one album.
